Now referring to Slide 3. For those of you who may be new to our company and mission, there are over 5 billion mobile phones in use today around the world, but many of us still experience gaps in coverage as we live, work and travel. In this backdrop, AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with everyday smartphones based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio.
Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gap faced by today's 5 billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected. The markets we are pursuing are massive, and we have a significant first mover advantage. It has been an extremely active and productive few months since the last quarterly update call. As our Chairman and CEO, Abel Avellan, will discuss, we have continued to make significant progress on technology, manufacturing, commercial and regulatory fronts and, very importantly, with regards to funding our growth strategy.
